BASIC Avalanche Awareness

This basic class is the first step in becoming avalanche aware in the mountains. This 1-2 hour classroom session covers the basics of the SIX POINTS of avalanche education. This is the perfect way to get your feet wet before continuing with more specific, advanced training. This is an introduction course to the SIX POINTS:

1. Terrain

2. Weather & Snowpack

3. Forecasting & Avalanche Problems

4. Travel & Communication in Avalanche Terrain

5. Decision Making

6. Companion Rescue

2-Hour Classroom Session

$30 per person, minimum 5 people

Avalanche LEVEL 1

Our Level 1 Avalanche Course is essential in developing the skills necessary to travel safely and confidently in avalanche terrain. The SPAE Level 1 course can be tailored towards, skiers, snowmobilers/snowbikers, or ice climbers. The three-day course (24 hours) focuses on the Six Points of Avalanche Education: Avalanche terrain, mountain snowpack/weather, avalanche forecast & problems, companion rescue, and decision making. This course consists of both classroom and field sessions; SPAE understands the importance of hands on learning and spends 60-70% of the course in the field. Our Level 1 follows the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association (AAA). Our instructors are experienced avalanche educators who provide the highest level of instruction. After completion, you will receive a certificate that lists your name, dates of course, & instructors name. This course is a good stepping stone if you decide to pursue more advance training.

Advanced Avalanche Awareness for Snowmobilers

This snowmobile-specific avalanche class includes 2-3 hours of classroom time and one full field day. The classroom session will cover avalanche terrain, weather & snowpack, decision making in avalanche terrain and avalanche rescue. A meeting time and place will be arranged before the classroom session. The field session will be held in an area that is convenient for the participants. Topics covered in the field will be snow structure and stability, recognizing avalanche terrain, safe travel protocol, decision making and avalanche rescue. The field day will be up to eight hours so pack a lunch and bring extra layers.

3-hour classroom session + One Full Field Day

$150 per person, minimum 5 people

Advanced Avalanche Awareness for Skiers, Snowboarders, and Ice Climbers

This fully-customizable avalanche class is geared towards non-motorized users. It includes 2-3 hours of classroom time and one full field-day. The classroom session will cover avalanche terrain, weather & snowpack, decision making in avalanche terrain and avalanche rescue. A meeting time and place will be arranged before the classroom session. The field session will be held in an area that is convenient for the participants. Topics covered in the field will be snow structure and stability, recognizing avalanche terrain, safe travel protocol, decision making and avalanche rescue. The field day will be up to eight hours so pack a lunch and bring extra layers.

Avalanche RESCUE Course

The one-day Six Points avalanche rescue course is designed to improve participant’s skills in companion rescue. Companion rescue offers the best chance of survival if buried in an avalanche. The course takes place in a backcountry setting and requires all participants have proper avalanche rescue gear (digital beacon, metal blade shove, avalanche probe). The course focuses on the following topics:

· Survival time and % of survival if buried in an avalanche.

· Safe rescue protocol

· How to conduct a quick and efficient beacon search with both single and multiple burials.

· How to conduct an efficient search with single and multiple searchers.

· Proper probing techniques.

· Strategic shoveling

· How to conduct a search if the victim is not wearing a beacon.

Both skier and snowmobiler specific courses are available.

One Full Field Day

$150 per person, minimum 5 people

CUSTOM Avalanche Course

Six Points Avalanche Education can custom-design specific courses to meet your individual or group needs based on experience level, interests, and goals. These custom courses can be tailored to both motorized and non-motorized users. Classes can range from single-day to multi-day classroom and field sessions. Custom courses keep the instructor-student ratio low and are a great way to dive into more advanced topics, including:

· Snow Metamorphism

· Fracture Mechanics/Avalanche Release

· Terrain Assessment

· Companion Rescue.
