Our Level 1 avalanche course teaches the fundamentals necessary to travel confidently and safely in the backcountry. This SPAE Level 1 course is orientated towards backcountry motorized users.
During this course, students will develop a solid foundation of skills needed to create and execute a safe travel plan when recreating in the backcountry. The SPAE curriculum focuses on the Six Points of Avalanche Education: Recognizing avalanche terrain, assessing mountain snowpack/weather, understanding avalanche forecasts & problems, human factor/decision making, and companion rescue. This course consists of both classroom and field sessions. The classroom portion will consist of four separate online videos (self-paced learning) and one live two-hour zoom session. The field portion of the course will consist of two full-field days conducted on Buck Ridge near Big Sky, MT . Our Level 1 follows the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association (AAA). SPAE instructors are experienced avalanche educators who provide the highest level of expertise. This course is designed to build a strong foundation of backcountry skills and is the perfect stepping stone to more advanced training in the future.
All field days for this level 1 class will be run through Canyon Adventures in Big Sky.
